Chimney fire displaces South Haven family

Story courtesy of Times of Northwest Indiana.

SOUTH HAVEN | A Tuesday morning chimney fire displaced a couple and their three dogs from their South Haven home.

Porter County police said the fire was reported about 4 a.m. at Jan and Merilou Yoder's home on Plymouth Road. Police and firefighters arrived to find the chimney engulfed in flames and flames coming from the upstairs bedroom.

Merilou Yoder told police she heard a puff sound coming from the wood burning stove and then saw flames inside the chimney. She closed the flue in hopes of extinguishing the fire, but the fire continued to spread throughout the chimney and roof area. She told police the chimney was cleaned about a year ago.

South Haven fire officials told police the fire originated in the wood burning stove. Firefighters advise people to clean their chimneys regularly and consider purchasing a chimney fire extinguisher, which looks like a road flare.

Police reports state the American Red Cross made arrangements for the Yoders and their pets to stay at a local motel.

South Haven Fireman's Ball

It’s that time of year again and we are planning an even bigger party than last year. The South Haven Fire Department is proud to present the 6th Annual Firefighter’s Ball on March 13th, 2010. The festivities will again be held at Duneland Falls Banquet Hall on S.R. 149. With the addition of a Silent Auction, we are expecting this to again be a huge success.

Cocktail hour will begin at 6:00 p.m. with dinner served at 7:00 p.m. Following dinner, the department will hold an awards ceremony honoring members of the department for outstanding achievement during the previous year as well as citizens of our community who went above and beyond the call in support of the department or their neighbors.
